Fall 2005
Hannah Suthers

This was the fall of hurricanes, Katrina, Orphelia, Rita, bringing drought relief to wilting trees. Migratory birds poured through in large flights between storm systems, resulting in an unprecedented high catch of birds in the mist nets even though we had to close early twice because of the quantity of birds, rain preempted banding once, and wind twice. The first frost came on November 20. Fruit resources were poor because of drought, except Virginia Creeper. Grass seeds were shriveled. Insects were plentiful.

We banded birds on 9 weekends from Sept 4-Nov 20. Sixty species were banded, 29 more tallied, totaling 67 migratory species (37 Neotropical) and 22 resident species. There were 638 encounters: 493 newly banded, 104 recaptured from previous banding, and 41 escaped. Seven flycatcher species, 6 thrush, 15 warbler and 9 sparrow species were banded. Both Chickadees and their hybrids were well represented. Sighting and banding highlights, dates, (number of birds):
